How a consignment split works

When a consigned item sells, the money is shared between the store and the consignor who owns it. The store’s part is its commission: a percent of the sale, or a flat fee per item. The rest belongs to the consignor and is paid out later, usually monthly.

Discounts change the numbers. If the discount is shared, both sides lose their share of it. If the store pays for it, the consignor still gets their share of the full price. If the consignor pays, the store keeps its commission on the full price and the discount comes out of the consignor’s part.

Booth rent, if you charge it, is separate: it comes off the consignor’s balance on its own schedule, not out of each sale.

Split questions

What is a typical consignment split?

Many shops keep 30% to 50% of each sale, with the rest going to the consignor. Antique malls often charge booth rent and a smaller commission, around 10%.

Percent or flat fee: which is better?

A percent scales with the price, so the store earns more on expensive pieces. A flat fee per item suits low-priced goods, where a percent would earn the store very little.

Who pays for a discount?

It’s your policy. Shared means both sides lose their share of it. Store-paid means the consignor is paid on the full price. Vendor-paid means the store keeps its cut of the full price.

Is sales tax part of the split?

Usually not. The store collects and pays the tax, and the split is worked out on the price before tax.
